Original music for Google DeepMind’s AlphaGenome Atlas
When SpecialGuestX approached me to compose the music for Google DeepMind’s AlphaGenome Atlas, the brief presented an unusual narrative challenge: the score had to communicate scientific progress and possibility without becoming triumphant.
AlphaGenome enters a field shaped by decades of scientific research. The music therefore had to respect that continuity, avoiding the suggestion of a sudden breakthrough detached from everything that came before it. At the same time, AlphaGenome Atlas represents a significant step forward and a powerful new tool for researchers. The film captures that balance through the scientists themselves: their curiosity, their collaboration with the Google DeepMind team, and a genuine sense of possibility.
That tension became the starting point for the score: celebrating possibility without claiming victory.
The musical language developed around piano and strings, surrounded by piccolo, flute, oboes, clarinets and bassoon. Rather than using the orchestra to create scale or grandeur, I treated it as a small, constantly moving ecosystem, with individual gestures interacting, overlapping and evolving around the central material.
Genomics inside the score
The science also found its way into the structure of the music.
DNA is written using four letters: A, C, G and T. In the genetic code, combinations of three letters form codons, resulting in 4³ = 64 possible codons. I used this principle of small elements organised into groups of three as a conceptual starting point for the score.
The music is written in 6/4, with its six quarter-note pulses repeatedly divided and reorganised into groups of three. It is not a literal translation of DNA into music, but a structural reference to the patterns underlying the genetic code.
The same idea extends into the orchestration. Double and triple tonguing in the woodwinds create rapid internal subdivisions and small bursts of sound: vibrant, volatile musical cells inspired by the microscopic scale of the world explored in the film.
Together, these elements allowed the score to suggest curiosity, movement and scientific possibility without turning progress into triumph. The result is a musical language built not around the idea of reaching a destination, but around research continuing to move forward.
